1977 Evinrude 85hp

I think I have a good idea and what went wrong. Friend said he was cruising and then it slowly died and then would crank , have a quick cough/fire but never start.

Removed plugs, 2 came out easy , others had slight resistance due to water entering the chamber.

Did comp test . Sure as ***** the bank that had the 2 plugs that came out with resistance got 0 PSI.

115 PSI on other 2 cylinders.

So sprayed some spray in those two spark plugs holes to lube it up in there and to keep things from getting "funky" in there.

So far I have this as my parts list....

0318662 Cylinder head gasket $50

0318335 Water jacket gasket $4

1)What other parts should I get while Im in there that isn't crazy $$$.

2)I notice this motor has deflectors? Are these easy to replace/install?

3)I don't have my manuals or torque wrenches with me, though I can loan a wrench. Whats the torque specs on the small water jacket bolts and the large cylinder head bolts? Warm motor up and re torque?

4)Do I use any sealing compound with either gaskets?

Thanks,
DamianJP

As long as you're in there check the water deflectors also. When's the last time the water pump was replaced and the thermostats checked ??

Don't know , i'm gonna ask.

Are the deflectors hard to do?

Im manual-less, can anyone give me the run down on doing these 2 gaskets and the torque specs on the small and large bolts?

Thanks,

18-20 ft lbs on the head bolts. Torque in a circular fashion outward from the center. Torque them gradually over multiple times till you get to the factory spec. Retorque after running it a few times.

Hi DamiianJP,
Just a heads up on the manual thing. I actually joined the county library system and found the sealock manuals not only for my 1970 Evinrude 115 but also the manual for my '73 merc 9.8
Not the best manual like a decent shop manual would be but for the price (FREE) I was a happy camper. Took 5 minutes to sign up and they actually had the books waiting for me as soon as I was issued my library card.
Hope that helps..

Boobie- Are the dflectors hard to do? How are they done?

Emd-What are the smaller water jacket bolts' torque?

ArrowNaughtic- Thanks, never knew about that. Yeah there differences but they both have their pros/cons. I like to have both. Sometimes if your lucky in west marine (or other local marine places) they'll have clearance section with older manuals in there for cheap.
Plus for a new Boater/Outboard Mech the beginning section of the selocs cover alot of basic stuff to get em' up to speed on maintenance and basic stuff quick.

Then to focus on certain areas %100 , you rock out the shop manuals.

Thanks,

Water deflectors a just small hose stuffed in to a certain part in the cylinder jacket, shouldnt require too much cursing.
Just pull out the current ones, clean the surfaces where they sit with a file and replace the hose. Lubricating with WD40 helps squeeze them in easier.
Have you removed the head to check your pistons/cylinder walls look ok?

Just snug the head cover bolts up. Actual torque spec is: 60-84 in-lbs.

I'm asking to learn, not advising, but it sounds like the motor overheated ("slowly died") which from my experience, unfortunately, means warped parts. Is simply replacing the gaskets enough to fix that?

Thank you

Bosunsmate - One less problem. :)

emdsapmgr - Thanks , sorry to keep asking but I don't want to snap a bolt. I have to work on my 'feel'.

Home Cookin - Your absolutely right and you would be right to advise me to do so , this is the same thing that costed me $750 to fully rebuild my Dad's 77' 55hp Evinrude .030 with brand new guts. In that case my nephews muscled it around till she pissed steam. And then sat up wet so she got all nice and 'funky', needless to say when I got home and saw that, my head was spinning.

Short anwser is no , a gasket is only good as BOTH mating surfaces. Check, Clean , Prep

This case happened quickly and hopefully when I dig in walls are nice, still all I can do is have him send the cylinder head and jacket to get them checked.
From what he tells me stripe bass and bluefish are coming in now and winter is around the corner for duck hunting so I think he understands the options he has with a 77' motor , his applications and timeframe.

1)$75 for 2 gaskets and 2 water deflectors and mabey abit more to redo the cooling system if it needs it from the combustion chamber intrusion. Hopefully compression and sealing is %100 after.

2) Tear engine down to do a %100 check of ALL mating surfaces and cylinder/rings ect. Unless your a outboard junkie and/or feel bad because the "Nephews" blew up you father's 77 55hp Rude , this isn't a option I don't think.

3)Repower used or new

Thanks guys and hope it helps,

Well he got a second opinion from his main mechanic that is too far and busy to work on it. He's says the ONLY reason why the gaskets blow is because the cooling system wasn't %100 and the metals warped popping the cylinder gasket.

Main mechanic replaced water pump last year but I dont think he touched the deflectors and/or the rest of the cooling system.

Call me crazy but a 36 year old gasket can blow out without the system overheating , right? Overheat alarm never came on, 2 of the 4 cylinders had a breach so the motor lost spark and stopped quick. Wasn't like only 1 cylinder was affected and they muscled it around furthering the damage. When I said slowly died i meant the motor didn't just suddenly stopped , it went from 5000RPM to 0RPM and died in about a good 10 secs approx. he said.

Sounds like hes going to junk the engine now.

I think she can be fixed but it is was it is, and it's his decision. I might ask him if he's interested in selling it. New CDI electronics replaced / power pack, trigger and stator. New starter solenoid too. My inner outboard "Junkie" is coming out.

I feel bad but it has nothing to do from me or my work.

Thanks,
DamianJP
