Hi, I just picked up a 1977 Crestliner Apollo with a 1977 Evinrude 75hp outboard. It has the Power Pilot control, I would like to replace the control cables, are all telex-style cables the same?

Thanks,

Steve

My throttle cable is really stiff, I just ordered new ones, could that be part of this bogging issue? I checked compression, 120-125, all three cylinders, the coils check ok static but I haven't checked them running yet and the plug wires have some electrical tape on them, I'm going to pick up wire and new boots today. Why is the bottom coil mounted at a different angle, I changed it to match the other two, and then looked online, they are all that way. The plugs all look good and they all look the same. Carbs were done right before I got it, they are spotless on the outside, I know that doesn't mean anything about the inside but it does appear they were off and got cleaned and new gaskets got put on, I saw the receipt for the carb work and lower unit work from the PO. I may try to pressure lube my throttle cable while I wait for my new ones (Monday delivery). The shift cable is nice and free. Sometimes it seems the old dual control was better..

Look for a friction control adjustment on the Power Pilot box -- may be confusing stiff control cable with tight friction control of the shift lever.

I found that and loosened it, it didn't help, the handle moves pretty freely right at the control with the little bit of slack in the linkage there. It really feels like the cable is dragging pretty bad. I'll replace them either way. Also, with the cover off of the motor, I can move the shift linkage a little and the cable end will move a little just with the little bit of slack in everything, the throttle cable is really difficult to move at all, I can make any movement of the cable end.

It's a 16' boat and it tops out at 30 mph, that seems about right for a 75 but it is not real quick out of the hole, I don't have a tach on the dash but I do have a photo tach, I could see if it's actually going to full throttle, what is max RPMs for a 1977 75 hp Evinrude?

I mentioned that the carbs had been looked at, I ordered new cables but i my impatience I also blew atf and oil into my throttle cable, it was pretty gummy before, much better after, I would say it still feels like a lot of resistance but without the cable on the throttle seems pretty heavy right on the motor, I also noticed that I'm hitting the carb throttle stops (I think) before I hit the stop screw, I would imagine I should adjust the screw so I hit that first?

Motor would need to be in gear for full movement of the throttle. Motor off, you probably have to rotate the prop a bit with a mechanical shift model for the gears to mesh.

NO, do not mess with the maximum spark advance Screw!!! And hope that nobody else has either. If the carbs are opening full before reaching maximum spark advance, the timer plate is sticking and needs to be cleaned and properly lubed.

The motor was off so it may not have been fully in gear which may also explain the extra resistance in the throttle. F_R, I have the Seloc manual for that motor, is the procedure to clean and lube the timing plate in there? Or could you tell me how to do it?

At position (straight up on the control) the short mark should be line up with the throttle roller, correct, this is where it is now, should I adjust the throttle cable to align the short mark with the roller?

Here are pictures of the motor in neutral, straight up stick on the control and wide open forward (I turned the prop to lock the gears.

In the idle position it looks like the throttle roller is past the short mark, I believe it should be aligned with the short mark.
Do I adjust the cable length to correct this?
If not, what do I adjust?

In WOT, the top screw (which stops the carburetor cam arm, the ignition plate is against the rubber stop) is not touching the arm but the carbs are against their independent stops
Do I adjust the screw on the center carb that adjusts the actual throttle plate position?
If not, what do I adjust?

I have the Seloc service manual but as far as I can tell it doesn't have a procedure for setting this up specifically, everything I find in it appears to assume that the cables/throttle linkage is set-up correctly. I have new throttle and shifter cables on the way so I will need to do this again soon.

Thanks,

Steve

Does anyone know where I can get a factory service manual, the Seloc manual does not cover this.

Thanks.
