This is an awesome site and has been really helpful.

I bought a 1977 55hp evinrude from a guy at a garage sale (preacher sold it to me and told me the problems he had with it). The main problem he had was that it would stall after running it for awhile then it would flood and not start. I figure it needs some carb work and plan on doing a rebuild over winter and replacing the water pump impeller and such.

So I get the motor mounted on my boat, so it's easier to work on. Well last night I decide to get it running.

First question is I replaced the lower unit fluid and when taking the bottom drain screw off a little stream of water shoots out. Not much maybe a tablespoon or less otherwise the looked fine. Is this alright? I did replace the washers on the screws.

Second problem (?) is that it has oil or black gunk/oil coming out from where the lower unit and the motor are connected. Is this just exhaust carbon and gunk from the exhaust?

I got the motor running finally after I flooded it. I realized it was flooded and went and ate dinner and let it cool down/gas disapate. So after letting it sit it started right up and I had it in a tank. I noticed that there's no pee hole, does the water come out of the two holes for exhaust on the back of the motor? Does the motor have to be in water up to the holes above the plate on the lower unit? I know the water intake is supposed to be in water but there are six holes above the prop that look like exhaust. The block got hot to the touch and I shut it down right away. Should I replace the water impeller right away? It looks like the carbs need to come off to get the lower unit off and I don't think I want to rebuild the carbs just yet.
Thanks for the info. I am going to get some pics up soon to show what I am talking about.

water has to be above the plate.it's easier with the carbs off. gunk normal, read post in engine faq forum. you did right thing to shut it down.

The water in the lower unit could have been caused by bad seals on the screws. After you get the motor running right, you can check it again after running it in the water for an hour or so. If there is water in there again, then you will need to put seals in the lower unit. If you don't know the last time the waterpump was serviced, then I would put a new pump kit in it. As TD suggested, make sure the water level is over the cavitation plate. You should see water spitting out of the 2 exhaust relief holes on the back of the leg. The carbs do not need to be removed to take off the lower unit for service..
