Hi all. I have a 77 Evinrude 70 HP That was not run for 3 year's. We have put kits in the caruretors new fuel pump and replaced all the fuel lines as well as a new gas tank. My thinking is to do it right the first time WELL that has not worked out in this case. Here's what is going on with my motor. I can start it up by using the choke then it will run long enough to run the gas out then die. I can start it back up and only if i keep hiting the choke will it run. We it is running it run good as long as you keep hitting the choke. Like i said only until that gas is gone then you let it die or hit the choke. I do have a new repair manual but Iam not finding any thing like that in it. Any help here I would be greatfull. Thanks Ernie.

Start it again but this time keep gentle pressure on the primer bulb and leave the choke alone.

See if it will keep running that way.

Re: 1977 Evinrude70 HP no fuel?

Obviously you are experiencing fuel starvation problems. If you pass ezeke's test you are definitely having delivery type starvation problems.

Apparently you haven't looked at everything in your replacement process.

Might disconnect the fuel line at one of the carbs and squeeze the bulb. You should get a goodly amount of fuel out every time you squeeze. If you do, you are looking at carb floats, clogged venturi jets and maybe fuel pump even though you said you just installed a new one.

Then pull the plugs so that the engine can spin over fast with the starter and see if your fuel pump is now causing fuel to come out of the same hose . If so that part of the system should be ok.

If you pass the above tests, your problems are carb related. You either didn't get all the crud out of the carb and you are blocking a venturi jet or the float and associated needle (shut off) valve are not functioning, or your jets are clogged or misadjusted.

If the float were the problem, choking wouldn't help it to run. You need to check fuel delivery inside the carb...i.e. high and low speed needle valves. The low is probably adjustable, the high, probably not. These valves usually start out at 1.5 turns open and once the engine is running right fine tune a 1/4 turn or so.

One way to check the needle valve and float is to remove the bowl allowing the float to flop. Then squeeze the bulb gently and fuel should run out of the carb. Then gently raise the flopped end of the float till the float is parallel with the carb housing. The fuel should stop right about there and cease to come out indicating that the float and inlet valve are functioning. Turning loose of the float and squeezing again should cause fuel to start coming out again.

HTH,
Mark

In troubleshooting a problem, especially on an engine that has recently had work done, it is a big mistake to take it for granted that the work done was successful. Don't write off the fuel system just because you put kits in the carbs and replaced the fuel pump, lines and tank.

All of your symptoms point to not enough fuel. That COULD be the fuel pump, or it could be all three carbs gummed in the jets, the new fuel tank restricted at the pickup or air leaks in the fuel line connections.

Ezeke and TexasMark give you good advice. It is unlikely that other types of problems that could cause your trouble on one cylinder would happen to all three at once.

Good luck. :)

First I would like to thank Texasmark and Ancient Mariner for you Help. The carbs were pluged some what. Enough to keep it from getting a good flow of fuel. The motor is running very good so far. I will make sure next time to watch out for this.I have more to do to this motor yet I want to make sure it is in top shape before going to the lake . Thanks Ernie.

You made my day man. Makes you feel good to get to help someone.

Might get you some"Sea Foam" (auto supply store...Autozone for one... has it) and run it in your fuel per the directions on the can. After ignoring good advice, from very knowledgeable people herein, I finally got some and I am totally convinced it works.

Mark
