1977 glastron t166 xl sportster question

i just bought a 1977 glastron t166 xl. my fuel guage don't work.i found out a hard way when i put gas in for the first time with a gas can, gas gushed out at the overflow port so i know the tank is full. the guage just bounce's up and down from empty and 1/4 tank. whats the best thing to check first?thanks for any advice.

Measure the ohms on the sender... 33-240 ohm if im not mistakin` then..the gauge.
other the level sender inside the tank would be the place to look, mine (`78) had the float worn out and found its way up the float arm!!
