1977 Johnson 115hp

Ihave a chance to purchase a 1977 Johnson 115hp. I can get the boat motor and trailer for $500.00. The motor runs good and the owner uses it a lot. However; there is ma cylinder with 60 psi compression and the others have 130 psi. It has been diagnosed with a ring problem. I have overhauled two suzuki outboards with success. How hard is it to replace the rings in a Johnson. I will get a manual but just looking for a quick answer and some tips.

Welcome!!<br /><br />The broken ring is probably on the starboard side. Anyway, the crossflow is one of the easiest motors to work on. The hardest part will be any stuck bolts. If it was a freshwater motor you may not have any. <br /><br />I'd look at it like this -- I'd buy it only if I could resell the boat and trailer and recover most if not all the money.

Is it possible to istall the rings on one cylinder without pulling the powerhead? Just wondering.

I believe the block needs to be split to gain access to the connecting rod caps. See picture. If its a broken ring you will most likely need to bore it anyway. I just went through a 73 115 johny and they are pretty simple designs.

you might want to get a can of jb blaster from your local auto parts it will help get any hard to turn bolts out it is much better the wd 40 good luck.

Thanks anyway, motor was sold before I got there.<br />Guess I will keep looking.
