1977 Johnson 140hp pee stream

I have a 1977 140hp that I can't see a pee stream up high on the engine when running on muffs. The only pee stream I see in low by the water intake and it runs when the engine is off and the garden hose is on. I was told by the previous owner that water only comes out of the exhaust. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

iwombat, how do you tell if the water pump is working?

Once it warms up, and the thermostat opens, you'll see it spitting out the exhaust relief holes just under the powerhead pan in the rear.
