I have been chasing this problem for over a month and today have confirmed I have a carb issue. Thanks to my brother loaning me the carb off his motor this afternoon. The motor will crank and run for around 5 seconds and go dead, unless I choke the motor. I have cleaned the carb every way I know possible, had 2 mechanics look at it also. My question is on the low speed needle, my kit came with a plastic sleeve that fits over the taper part of the needle and goes against the step. Looking at the factory diagram I do not see this part. I used it in my rebuild could this be my problem? Has anyone ever encountered this problem? I have taken it out and will try it tomorrow after noon, but hoping some one will confirm my guess.

Thanks,
Flintcreek

I am thinking thinking that plastic sleeve was a protection packing for shipping and handeling so no damage occures to the needle,Take it off and try it.

I think you are right about the sleeve. It's gotta go.
Make sure the needle is snug in the packing
so it won't suck air.

I had an '81 J35 and it had a little red plastic sleeve that was used to hold the needle against turning. It seemed to have replaced the packing nuts of old.

Thanks, guys I am working on geeting the sleeve out, it is down in the idel screw hole and not wanting to come out. Samo_ott this is a clear plastic actually in front down next to the tapered needle part before the screw part of the needle. I also have the red rubber or what ever material where the packing nuts of old go. I will let you know when I get it out and try the motor out.

Re: 1977 Johnson 35 hp carb low speed needle question.

Finally fixed, I am having trouble with my scanner and my camera tonight, but here is what fixed it. On the OMC instruction sheet for carburetor service there is a part # 3 bearing needle valve. This is a sleeve that fits over the needle and against the threads on the needle. I removed this from the carb and it runs fine now. I will try later to scan and post the OMC instructions with the part showing in the picture. Small crochet hook worked good for pulling it out. The original parts list for my motor does not show this part. Unless you look real close you can not tell it is in the hole for the low speed needle.
