Just started rebuilding the old johnson after replacing the head... popped the new head on and did a comp test, all cyls a 125psi..

When i try turning her over, i see gas coming out of the carb mouth, and i've never seen that before.. she sounds like she wants to turn over.

It will start sputtering a little as im still cranking, and occasionally backfire.

Any ideas?

Floats/inlet needles leaking or stuck.

If the backfire is LOUD and from the exhaust, double check that the plug wires are on the right plugs.

Good luck. :)

OK, I'll open up the carbs tomorrow and check it out..

Backfire isnt that loud, but it does sound like its coming from the exhaust. All the wires are on the right plugs... that i know for sure.

I know one thing that may be screwed up is the little armeture bar on top of the throttle control that moves the timing advance foward when more throttle is applied was broken and off the throttle bar, when fixed and put back on the throttle bar is when this problem started to occur. at least when it was broken it would idle... :/
