Hello all.
I have been fighting with a 1977 Johnson 70 hp outboard.
The problem I am having is (I believe) in the gear case. The motor will shift into fwd gear fine and then when trying for reverse it will clunk as if the clutch dogs are not fully engaging.
I can adjust shift cable and linkage till i can get reverse gear but then it does the same thing for forward gear.
I pulled the motor off the boat, dropped the gearcase and measured the shift shaft height. it was a bit too low according to the resource i found for the height. (sorry I dont remember exactly where i found the info now) Anyways, after adjusting the shift shaft height we reassembled the motor and put it back on the boat. it seemed to be better but still not quite right. As this is a rental boat it must be absolutely correct and reliable. Does this sound like a clutch dog problem?? I really dont want to keep pulling the motor and tearing it apart until i get some solid info on the cause of this problem. I know how to do the repairs but this being as old of a motor as it is I cant spend more and more $$ on unnecessary parts.
Sorry for sounding long winded, just trying to give as much info as i can..
thanks in advance......

I dont believe its a clutchdog or gears,It does sound like shatshaft adjustment. What you need is someone with the correct height.Where did you get the one you mention? A oem manual is your best bet

Will it shift manually with the cable off try shifting it by hand, could be a stretched shift cable.

Yes. It will shift manually with cables removed but I have to hold the shift lever or it will pop out of gear. and the cables were just bought three mos ago and had not been installed until a week ago.
I found this post
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158088&page=1
and it appears that my shift shaft height should be 21 25/64".
I will pull it from the boat (Damn I wish I had a trailer for it) and tear it down again and re-check my measurements ..
Oh well if nothing else I can now pull the motor drop the gearcase and replace everything in under an hour...
Always gotta look at the bright side of things...
