Hello, I had my boat out two weeks ago and noticed it started stalling when I put it in gear. Once I got in I noticed a greenish fluid leaking out the lower unit on the side. It had been damaged(small ding). My question is 1, would this cause it to stall when putting it in gear and 2 the insurance company paid me $400.00 to replace the lower unit shell only, is this something that can be done by a shop for this fee or does the lower unit need replacing? Sorry it is a 140 HP, thanks.

A picture would be helpful. If you have lower unit damage and it's leaking oil, it's possible the lower unit is locked up. You can pull the lower unit off and manually shift it. Once in gear, turn the driveshaft clockwise and see if the prop turns. If it does it's not locked up.

It is cracked no doubt I see the hole. The prop turns freely but my question is can just the housing be replaced like the insurance company says or does the whole lower unit need to be replaced? Thanks for the responses

Sorry, no picture available at this time because the boat is at a different location, but it is a hole in the housing on the side.

Sounds like something blew apart in it.

It depends. The insurance company may opt for the low cost option. If you buy a new case and transfer the gearset, you are getting into extra labor-higher cost. A rebuilt lower may actually be cheaper from a total cost standpoint. Bolt it on and go. Most dealerships can offer both costs to the insurance company. Once the insurance company determines what they'll pay, you have the option of using their $ and some of your own to get the option you really want.

Thanks emdsapmgr, that is what the shop said also about the labor cost. The insurance company wanted to pay for 1.5hrs for the labor which won't get it. Again thanks.
