So my starter went out in my Johnson and instead of doing the smart thing and having it rebuilt, I bought another one off ebay. The ebay one works fine and is the correct mount its just the splines on the top are 8 spline and the original one is 9. Various marinas have told me that 8 splines are correct. I also destroyed my original starter getting the spline piece off, thinking I could interchange them but the threading is different on the two starters to put it on the new one. I tried the new one for a second and it worked fine but you can tell it is not made for that flywheel as it was marking/scaring it. I do not want to damage that expensive hard to find flywheel. I'm looking/calling everywhere trying to find this 9 spline piece and really have no idea what to do now. Any thoughts how I can get this situation fixed? I read somewhere that a 70hp 1977 Johnson starter is the same and has 9 splines? Is this true or a possibility. Any help is appreciated since shes broke down on my first outing this summer. =( Thanks redsolvtech
