1977 Mercury 1150 kicking into gear at fast idle.

My Mercury 1150 tries to kick into gear at fast idle (idle lever all the way up). Is it possible the throttle controls need some adjustment? Or is this an indication of a more serious problem?

Does you main throttle/shift mechanism shift the gearbox normally into gear? Any chance you have the throttle cable hooked up to the shift linkage?

i'd start with making sure the cables are connected and adjusted correctly.

The main throttle shifts into gear just fine. It only does this at max idle. If I back it off a bit, it is ok then. Is adjustment something easy to do?
