First, I want to say that this is THE BEST boat site online!!! You guys have HELPED ME SO MUCH! Thank You,Thank You, Thank You!!!!
My engine: 1977 merc 850 4 cyl ser#4725418
My question is: Can a stator form a 1993 Mercury 60 hp work on my 1977 850? I dont have the other engine serial number.
In 1990, the 60 hp engine used the same stator that is in mine (174-5454k1). They changed over to a (174-9710k1) in 1991. I did a little research and the "only" diffrence that "I could find" is in the cranking voltage. Mine has 180V and this other one uses 150V. Can I cause any problems using 30v less? Everything else about them are the same! Same wiring and design and it mounds right up. I did not try to start my engine only checked to see if it fit and it did. They also both have 20v+ HS and 180v LS. If I cant use this as a whole unit, are "ANY" of the coils interchangable?
I just purchased a brand new one for my engine and then found one "like new" on ebay for $35 delivered. The engine blew 2 months after the guy put it on so I grabbed it. I would like to keep this as a spare if I ever need it. If it wont work, hopefully I can find someone else that can use it.
THANKS ahead of time!!!!

Re: 1977 Mercury 850 stator interchange

Can a stator form a 1993 Mercury 60 hp work on my 1977 850?

If its a OEM stator the answer is no(wiring difference) and if a CDI it may work but measure the thickness of stator as it may be to thick and rub top of flywheel. Stator thickness differs from one to the other due to output.
