I went to Hardy lake today. And when I went forward and started to get up on plane,I heard a low clunck and I lost forward gear. But reverse still worked .The first thing I checked was that I was getting power to the outdrive.I could hear it engage with my ear by the lower unit. Also it has metal shavings in the oil .So I called a few places and looked in my manual. And I belive it is the forward clutch spring.I have the lower gear case off of the outdrive. And im getting ready to take it apart. Has anyone has had this problem befor. And does anyone have any tips on taking the lower gear case apart.

thanks,
Tim

Springs breaking on those drives are common. To bad it's not reverse(alot easier to do)I you have a manual thats a good start. Take you time and work slowly. If you are going to replace the prop shaft seals you should get a new bearing for the end cap.I've taking them out before without damaging them but if you havn't done it before you may wreck it.Use a new pinion nut(it is a ny-lock style ,one time use only) and make sure you don't pinch or crush the wires going to the magnets. Also you don't have to remove the fwd. magnet so don't try.

Well I found the problem. It was the forward spring.Which was $150 used or $350 new.I went with the used.I tested the forward And reverse coils. And luckly they were good. Now all I have to do is wait for a gasket set to come in sometime today. It was alot easier than I thought it would be to take apart and put together.I thought it would be almost as fun as an automatic transmission is to work on.To bad it wasn't reverse like you said. because all I would have to do would be take the gearcase head off. Thanks for your help.

Tim
