I just picked up this boat for a good price. I have no idea how long it has been sitting up. Looks like someone rebuilt the engine. My question is getting parts for this thing. I have ordered the manuals for it. I am going to pull the outdrive off and go through it and see what needs replacing. Any help with this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

They stopped making OMC drives a while ago,The older ones like yours were poorly enginered and performed just as bad.Parts are getting harder to find.Good luck with this.
The motor is a Chevy block and ran real good.Trim/Tilt system was poor at best.
You can spend a lot more money or get a Mercury/Mercruiser or Volvo setup.Sorry,Jerry

Many of the maintenance parts and some of the more important parts can be found through aftermarket suppliers (Sierra, Mallory, GLM, etc.) much of which can be found right here on iBoats. However, you will find that some of the more major parts are getting extremely hard to find or may be completely unavailable. OMC has been out of business for 12+ years and the Stringer drive hasn't been in production since 1985. eBay may be another good outlet for finding some of the more difficult parts, but you're in for a challenge regardless.

Thank God for Craigslist and the Great Lakes Region, where OMC parts are more readily available. Yes, this means used parts in many situations, but parts non the less....

Okay I can get a complete Volvo Outdrive with the trim capability. How different is the opening and how much weight difference are we talking about. The big question is how difficult is the istallation? The only thing I can think of is the donor boat is a Ford and my boat is a supposedly a Chevy. My boat is in very good shape so I don't mind putting some time in it.

Tremendously different. The old OMC Stringer was a one of a kind beast. You'll be doing some fabrication.

Okay well then that is out. I will work with what I have. Hopefully I can find the parts I need to get it up and running. I know the engine cranks through. I am having the carb rebuilt. I was told if I don't do anything else I should at least reseal teh outdrive. I know for sure I need to get a new boot. I will be glad when the manuals get here. I am getting anxious to get it in the water.
