1978 115 evinrude water pump question

Just installed a new pump assembly, everything. When the thermostat opened up, water started coming out of the exhaust ports on the leg like a hose. I have a tell tale and it hade great pressure. I know water is supposed to spatter out of the ports but never have I seen it flow out like a hose. What did I do wrong?
