Hi, I posted a few months ago about the boat I bought a '78 procraft with a 115 hp johnson. Well its been running great until today I was coming in and lost alot of power and motor has a sound like a light grinding sound in power head . I shut it down right away and luckily was towed in. The guy who towed me said it sounds like broken rings. I know my description of the sound is not a big help. I was just wanting to know if what the guy said sounds correct and what it involves to fix if it is rings. I was told the motor was rebuilt recent to my purchase. The gaskets on power head all look new and I thought maybe the rings were not installed right . The starter about fell off one day the bolts came loose so nothing would be a surprise. Also would I be better off with a rebuilt power head or what is the best thing to do and what kind of money is involved.
Thank you,
KYHunter

How much time do you have on it since it was rebuilt?

I really don't know the person I bought it from got it on a trade from someone . He told me he took it to a dealer for a inspection and was told it looked like it was rebuilt. I've put at least 40 or so hours of actual run time on it myself. I run seafoam in gas and had no indication of a problem until last night. Any help greatly appreciated.

First, let's do a compression test and see what we have....I have a feeling we will find something there.

I did compression check it led to taking power head off found piston with broken ring and badly cracked crankshaft almost broke in two also a hole in crankcase but this was not caused by this incident it has been like that for a while. Can I just replace the one bad piston and try to get a crankshaft? The cylinders and other pistons are all in good condition, the one where the bad piston was is very lightly scratched. Can I hone the cylinder and is it possible to repair the crankcase or do I need to try to get that as well. I recall something about having to get a block and crankcase together . I am on disability and can't afford a rebuilt power head or for that matter a new block and crankcase. What are my options?
Thanks everyone for any suggestions!
KYHunter
