1978 115hp evinrude goes tick tick tick

motor is making a ticking noise. it sounds like an electrical short somewhere. motor runs, starts and idles fine.<br /><br />also how do i test if the motor is charging the batteries.<br /><br />all help and suggestions will be appreciated<br /><br />cheers mick

The ticking does sound like fire jumping. One way I check this when it's hard to spot is wait till dark, put the muffs on it pull the cover and crank her up. If you have any fire jumping you should be able to find it easily. <br /> if you don't have a panel mounted volt meter you can use a multimeter to check the voltage while the engine is running to see if the battery is charging. You should be getting around 13 to 15 volts at the battery. Shut the engine off and check the voltage again. It should be less.<br /><br />Good luck :)
