Greetings all,

I have been reading posts for a while and you all have been very helpful.

I just got a 1978 175hp 'rude. It runs great, has great compression (120 all six), and looks pretty good despite its age. There is no steering arm and I cannot find a part number anyplace. I'd like to get one on eBay, if I can, but want to make sure that it fits.

Can any of you help?

Thanks,

Bob

If you go to the "Top Secret File" at the top of this page, there is a listing of Salvage Yards, and one of them will either have the arm, or, give you the number you need.

Look at the FIRST post on the FIRST page of the "Johnson and Evinrude Outboards" forum.

You may be referring to the stainless link arm which connects the tongue of the engine to the end of the steering cable. OMC makes a number of different ones, (esp if you need an offset arm) depending on your application and configuration of your steering cable. The Bombardier parts and accessories guide (at any dealer) will show the various kits which may work with your setup. Ask specifically about the kit 173700, which is the most common current one. You can also look these parts up on the Bombardier website yourself. epc.brp.com. You will need to go into the OB accessories and then look under your year for the steering section. Some parts listed may supercede in today's inventories.

173700 looks right. How do I know, for sure, before buying one? The catalog doesn't list it.

You could call Bombardier Customer Service in Waukegan: 1-847-689-7090, or check with your local dealer. The dealer has a book with pictures of all these steering parts/kits.
