1978 175hp anode?

Greetings all,

I hope this doesn't seem like too dumb a question. I recently picked up a 1978 175hp 'rude in fantastic mechanical shape (even 120 compression, no leaks, runs smooth). I had been used exclusively in fresh water and was well maintained. I am going to be trailering it and using it in salt water.

Try as I might, I cannot find any sacrificial zincs. I have examined the motor and gone through the factory parts and service manuals to no avail.

1. Are there any zincs and, if so,where are they located?
2. If none, which one(s) should I get and how do I install them?

Thanks,
Bob Pastor

Re: 1978 175hp anode?

They did not do much engineering for anodes back then. Many of today's engines use the trim tab just above the prop as one anode. If yours is painted, you may want to strip the paint. It is replaceable. The later gearcases have an anode hole in the lower unit casting, but yours does not. Bombardier does make a number of optional anodes, found in their Parts and Accessories book, at their dealerships. These can be added to the anti-ventilation plate. Ask them about part numbers 173029 and 431708. If by chance, you have trim tabs on that boat, you can add round anodes to the topside of the tabs-sold in a number of sizes.
