I haveva 1978 35hp johnson 35853R I've mounted on my 16ft skiff along with console and shifter ( new issues to me learn as I go)
I had control box backwards ok that's fixed. Still not getting linkage set up correctly. No cables not getting into forward gear, reverse ok. Having trouble with getting shifter lever on outboard in neutral.
Manual says find neutral loosen lever and reposition. Did but hole ligning up with top bolt with shims doesn't quit line up.
Also the throttle cable is about 1/2 short I have nomore adjustment to it to reach.
I'm at a loss as to what to do or where. I have rebuilt the water pump several months ago and the motor has always shifted.1000014238.jpg1000013693.jpg1000013688.jpg
This is backwards and I have fixed that.
No numbers on shifter so I dnt know what model or year.

Lower shift rod is to be screwed all the way into the yoke in the gearcase.-----Notches in upper and lower shift rods must be lined up BEFORE the 1/4" fine bolts are put in.----Only adjustment is up at the top ( near handle ) on these.----Shift rod height does not apply to this motor !

Yep prop spins free.
I'm gonna check shift rod hight when can walk better. Big toe and plywood had a argument, toenail I think lost it
lawnmower did one of mine took 10-11 to grow back so be patient
3 toe tips did not make it and one shoe . did not hurt for about 2 seconds then all hell broke loose
