I have been reading and reading and trying to figure out what's wrong with my motor all of a sudden...started a more in depth thread here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=563562

Quick questions since other thread may be too much reading...
Q: If I am getting too much gas into my cylinders will it cause it to not want to start at all...same sounding as no spark?

Q: Will it also cause the gas / oil that's not being burned to come out of my prop after repeatedly trying to start?

Bonus question:
If both of the above are true is there something I can try...drain...pry on..bang...unscrew...etc..lol
To try and figure out what's causing this? Again it was running great til I got it home...now so start and gas coming out of prop.

Thank you...and I don't care if it's 2:00 a.m. tonight I will try to start this dang thing if I figure out what to try..lol
Sorry neighbors but I planned on being out fishing at 4:00 a.m...not sitting here stressing about motors again...lol

Re: 1978 70 HP - Carbs Stuck Open?

Well, it is 3.30 AM and I have not read your other thread, so can I give you a generic answer?

Q1: Sure. The condition is called "flooding". Air and fuel must be within a certan ratio to be combustable. However, unless you are over choking it or something, it wouldn't be too likely. Or whatever the "stuck open" thing is all about.

Q2: Absolutely. One of the most often asked questions is what is that black goo running out my prop.

Bonus. I don't believe in fixing anything without first diagnosing the problem. Back to Q1, do you suspect no spark? Have you checked? Dare we assume it is operator error? Sit back, calm down, then go through the starting procedure from step one. Only don't choke it if you suspect it is flooded. It will clear itself out.

If you run the starter(don't choke it) for a bit and it still doesn't fire....pull a plug and see if it's wet. If it's wet, you're flooded(or don't have spark).

Re: 1978 70 HP - Carbs Stuck Open?

F_R..I did check spark and compression that's why I wanted to post this thread since it must have been carb / fuel related.

Bonairil...first time I pulled plugs they were dry...second and third time wet (between starting attempts). So that's confuses me a little more.

However...I left the plugs out over night after cleaning them with carb cleaner...tried starting the motor this morning with choke fully closed and fuel disconnected...IT STARTED FOR A SECOND...smoked and died.

This is leading me to think it is indeed a fuel issue.

The only things I have read that could possibly cause this are...
Stuck floats (hope that's right term)
Hole in Fuel Pump or bad fuel pump (causing it to always give gas and filling cylinder)
Bad gas mix ratio (new gas with exact amount of oil added for 50:1) HOWEVER oil was at least a couple years old and I was told that was fine.

Have to go work at the in-laws today so won't be back until tonight...at which point I will continue on this and then start a thread on how to remove salt from motor that wasn't flushed out...lol (that's why I was so worried..first time in salt and I can't clean her out...yay!)

Thank you.

Re: 1978 70 HP - Carbs Stuck Open?

Anyone know if a couple small holes in on the outside edge of the fuel filter to pump gasket would cause excess fuel to be supplied?
I would think it would only cause some fuel to drip from the filter if anything...which it's not. But there are a couple small dings in the gasket....#2 below

RUNNING NOW...Phew!

I probably should have done one thing at time but went ahead and did the following...
- Drained float bowls (wife was watching as I tipped motor up and said nothing came out of one...brown stuff out one and clear out of another)
- New spark plugs (the ones in it looked real good but got new ones anyway)
- Used the OLD gas that is like two years old...did not run it long and will try my fresh gas after I let this sit for awhile to see if it floods out or whatever it did...if it starts again I will try the process over with the new gas to see if it will happen with that.
