1978 70hp johnson water entering engine compartment on muffs

I have a model# 70el78c motor with good compression and runs good on muffs. Water is getting into the engine compartment while running it in the driveway on muffs and water is coming out of the top of the midsection. What needs to be done? I just bought the boat and am trying to get it ready for sea trials.

Hard to understand exactly where the water is coming out, can you post any pictures?

I don't have any pictures. Water is pooling inside of the power head compartment where the hood mounts to. Water is pouring out around the front top of the midsection

By your description I would look at the gaskets between the power head and the exhaust housing.
