1978 70hp johnson water problem

I have a 1978 70hp johnson outboard that has water coming up drive shaft with muffs on. Water pump is working cuse water is exiting water outlet port. Is this normal?

Yes, this is probably normal. Sounds like your motor is running since you've got water coming out the pee hole. (This is the technical term. Nobody will know what the hell "water exit port" means.)

Make sure you've got a good stream coming out... if it's peeing weak then you need to replace the impeller. If and when you replace the impeller, you'll see that the water intake isn't a tightly sealed system which will explain why you've got water leaking out all over when you hook it up to the muffs.

"Make sure you've got a good stream coming out..." not necessarily... on my 120hp 1989 the water coming out of the tee tale is not a jet or a stream... is more like a drip... initially i thought there was a problem with the impeller or there was an obstruction but apparently that is normal in the older johnsons... plus i have a pressure gauge installed and pressure at WOT is 16 PSI which is normal....

when was last time the water pump was changed? a year ago? two years ago? cant remember? well then now its the time... good luck

Thanks for all responses. I talked with another outboard mechanic who also told me if water is still circulating moter properly, this is nothing to worry about.
