Hello to all,
Recently this motor had the shift cable replaced and the first time out it wouldn't shift into reverse. The local mechanic readjusted
and it seemed to be alright. But this weekend
it jumped out of forward and sounded really bad, so what i'm asking is,how can I make sure that when I shift into either gear it's fully engaged.
Also, the boat had planed off before it happened.

Thanks, Boo

Sounds like the shift still isn't adjusted correctly. Basically, it should require the same amount of shift/throttle lever movement to get into either gear from Neutral. It's also possible that the remote control is set for a Johnnyrude which uses a 5" cable travel wheras Merc uses a 6" travel. If it's the original control, that's probably not the case. But most controls made after that are adjustable for either 5" or 6". You should check your gearlube. Your problem could also lie in the gearcase.

The cable is improperly installed or adjusted, a bad reverse cam can cause problems also

Thanks Willy B & Laddies for your replies. The gearcase is a suspect but haven't checked for excessive metal or chunks of gear yet. Should be able to inspect this weekend.

Thanks again, Boo
