I have a 78 85hp johnson took it out today after changing ing coil and spark plugs..Engine started first time everytime no choke needed. However when I give it full throtle the engine would rev high then act like it wouldnt go into gear..If I stopped put it in nuetral then put it in rev, then back into forward give it full throtle it would grab and run great..Does this make sence?Do outboards have different gears? Like a high gear cause runing low rpm it has no problem just when you go to give it full throtle and not everytime..Now the engine had no problem it ran great and had instant responce it was just like it wouldnt go into high gear..Thanks for help advise...OH yea the prop is brand new so im farely sure its not spun..

You may try having someone move the control forward fast while you watch the cable. It may be slipping at the engine end.

Just the one forward gear, solid. Engine revs but the boat don't go? Kind of like a worn out slipping clutch in an old car? When you throttle back down, does it start moving again at low speed? I don't know...maybe it can fall out of gear and back into gear without a noticeable sound.

Sure sounds like a spinning prop, or cavitation. And you ruled out spun prop already. Anything about the new prop that would make it more likely to cavitate than the old one? If I was you I'd post a question in the prop forum.

Can ya think of anything else you did differently? Like maybe listening to a different radio station? ;)

Might try trimming in a hole or two(If Manual) and see how it does....

check linkage for shifter thats definitly not it..I think it posibly is a bad clutch dog or something like that..If I give it full throtle engine will go to high rpm like it should but you can feel it like catch and then let go..And other times it just ran like it should..I dont know really how best to describe it but I guess it would be like driving down the road in gear then pressing on clutch then leting it go then pressing it in and so on..Then other times its like you just let out the clutch and it runs like it should..I really have no mid ground with throtle its either cruisen slow or flying..Once I push throtle past about 3/4 it either revs real high and doesnt catch or it catches and takes off..Thanks guys for youre help I know its not easy helping a morron..

I'd have that prop checked out, new or not... or at least put a mark on the hub and the prop housing and see if they align after running

solid did you disconnect the shift cable and shift it by hand. get someone else to drive and hold your hand on the shift lever and see if it trys to pull out of gear.

Ok Ill try that what if it does try to pull out of gear, other than the obvious that thats my problem, what would that mean to fix any ideas???

Got to agree, tashasdaddy, it's a load easier to adjust that linkage than to rebuild the gearcase and then adjust the linkage.

That's a pretty good description, and it's pretty much what cavitation feels like (maybe ventilation too, but I don't know about that).

That motor might could go fall out of gear quietly, but could it really "catch" like that without making a clunking noise? It don't have an actual clutch plate like a car - the clutch dog just mates up with the spinning gear (or is the dog spinning...whichever). You can view a schematic by clicking http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E and following the links to your year/model gearcase (select "Johnson" from the Products dropdown box & click "go").

I've been assuming that you just acquired the new prop and hadn't run it before - is that correct? I mean, did this trouble start when you first installed the prop, or had it been working ok? Possible you got a bad hub from the factory, but I didn't think a spun hub could give intermittent symptoms like that.

Still a good idea to rule out the linkage problem as suggested.

And don't worry, we wouldn't laugh at ya even if you were a morron! ;)

Thanks Jtexas Im begining to think it must be cavitation or something like that. This motor is somewhat new to me only have had the boat out twice and both times with different props did the same thing..I know I had a bad coil so I chaged that..I have some pictures I took to post on the prop forum but I can figure out how to post them..I am getting a lot of bow rise so I think it must be a bad set up..Engine to low or something..
