1978 85HP choke question

Hi everyone,
I had horrible starting problems with my motor until this summer. I had removed the carbs and sprayed them out with aerosol carb cleaner in the past, to no avail. This time, I went the whole dunk-in-a-bucket-of-carb-cleaner and rebuild route.

It starts like a champ! I'm a huge fan of thorough carb cleaning/rebuild now. I assisted a friend with some vintage carbs, and they were horrible compared to mine, so I didn't really think it was going to make that much of a difference until he convinced me. (Thanks ASDASC!)

Anyway, after the rebuild, I'm wondering if I lost a spring or something. The choke plates won't open when I flip the manual lever to the off position. I've looked through the diagrams, and haven't seen anything that seems to be missing, but for the life of me, I'm not sure how it is supposed to "unchoke" itself. I can push the linkage and open them, but I'm sure I didn't have to do that in the past.

Is there supposed to be a return spring somewhere? Is it part of the solenoid?

Thanks in advance!

Try the parts diagrams on the BRP website.

Not so complicated. The choke relies on the weight of the solenoid core and gravity to open. If there is a misalignment, or the linkages are not fitted correctly, the choke mechanism will bind up.

Cool, I'll play with the alignment a bit more. It seems really easy to flip down, so a spot of lube in a key point is probably all it needs.

Thanks!
