Hi All,
I would to like find out the firing order of my 1978, 3 cylinder, 85HP Chysler Charger. I don't know which cylinder is # 1 (top or bottom) nor the location of # 1 on the distributor cap as well as the rotation of the rotor.
Thx
Frk

Side note: the gas was pouring out of the top & bottom carbs..it was a sticky needle valve in the float bowls...lack of use...took carbs off & apart... cleaned with "brake cleaner" ...all is good now..hope this helps someone.

Firing order is 1-2-3 and the first cylinder should be the top one.

When the "0" on the flywheel is at the pointer mark with the engine in neutral, then the distributor should have the curved mark on the pully matching the curve of the flywheel and the center mark will usually be between two teeth on the ring gear. Now the distributor is set to TDC #1 cylinder. #1 wire should be the one closest to the throttle tower or rearmost on the engine. If in doubt, remove the cap and see where the rotor is pointing. The distributor rotates CLOCKWISE, looking down, same as the engine.

If you change the distributor setting, (rear bolt is in a hole, front bolt is in a slot.) or remove it, be certain that you do not get the drive belt too tight when you re-install it. This will bind up the linkage causing hard throttling, difficult or missed shifting into gear, difficulty returning to idle, and shorten the belt life. Too loose, and timing will be erratic. Proper tension is acheived by using a .010 feeler gauge. Push the gauge into the center of the belt as if it were a pointing finger. The .010 gauge should deflect the belt 1/8 to 3/16 inch before bending. Also, refresh the grease in the distributor rotation bearing. one or two shots in the fitting on the side should do.

Howdy and THANKS,
Firing order is 1-2-3 Top to bottom.

Top of mag has an aluminium indicator (kinda like a wierd happy face) pointing to Rotor posistion inside the distributor cap (which rotates clockwise looking down).
I re & re'd the distributor cap and trimed back\cleaned HV leads, cleaned insulation displacement pins on cap (they were all green w oxidation).

Removed all spark plugs, stuck my finger in # 1 plug turned flywheel by hand (NO BATT CONNECTED) to find compression stroke, put plugs back in connected HV wires....turned the key and ....she started like it was a new engine....gee I almost cried.....

Thanks again
Frank, Marj and my kids.
