1978 85hp evinrude starting problem

i have and '78 85 hp evinrude, i can put boat in water and start motor, as soon as i turn it off,whether an hour or five minutes later, it wont restart with key, i have to manually start it, with the cover off i can see that the starter pinion does not engage,help

check you battery connections

thanks for your quick reply, about a month ago i took the boat in to my repair shop and they found the battery connections loose and tightened them, but the problem still exists, when you say battery connections, do you mean on the posts? because they cant get any tighter!!could the problem be an old battery ?, i'm not sure how old the battery is.
