1978 85hp johnson tach question

I have a 78 85hp v4 javlyn outboard and on my boat a 73 larson I have a omc tach that came with the boat..I dont know if it works but Id like to hook it up to my motor but I dont know were to start..The tach is currently hooked up through dash and fuse looks good and theres one wire going back to the engine but its been cut..Is this the only wire I need to hook up to the motor? and if so were do I hook it to?Thanks for help

How many wires lead out of the tachometer?<br /><br />Are they part of the tachometer or does the tach have a terminal strip that the wires attach to?<br /><br />What color are the wires?

Ill have to check but I know for sure the wire that was cut going back to engine is gray
