1978 9.8 Merc ?year

Hi I just bought a used 9.8 merc this morning,dealer told me it was a 78: but I would like to be shure since he didnt write the year on the sales contract ,,Been looking at some of the charts that you can find in some of the threads here,I am only getting more confused by them, the serial no on the plate of my engine says 7094266 could somebody turn the lights on for me please! Thanks for any clarifications,,Confused Mike

Built in Canada in 1977 but it is possible that it was commissioned in 1978.

Thanks for the quick reply,when you say it was comissioned in 78 would this mean that the improvements were in it?I was led to beleive that the 78s had a stainless steel shaft ?is there an easy way to get to this shaft then I could verify with a magnet if it dont stick would mean its stainless...Mike

What I mean is that maybe it was first sold in 1978. it is still a 1977 model.

I don't know when SS shafts were first introduced but it should only be an issue if the motor has seen salt water.
