35 degree BTDC. Never heard of needing a tach to set timing before.

thanx laddies but this is what i read as follows: Maximum Advance Timing

Mount the engine in a test tank.

Remove the engine cowling.

Connect the fuel line to a fuel source.

Install a tachometer to the engine.

Connect a timing light to the No. 1 (top) spark plug.

Start the engine and allow it to warm to operating temperature.

Water must circulate through the lower unit to the engine any time the engine is run to prevent damage to the water pump in the lower unit. Just five seconds without water will damage the water pump.

Move the shift lever into FORWARD gear.

Advance the throttle until the maximum timing mark on the flywheel is aligned with the timing mark on the starter housing. Refer to the General Engine & Tune-Up Specifications chart for recommended rpm.

Adjust the maximum spark advance screw until the end of the screw just makes contact with the throttle lever.

Back off the throttle to normal idle, and then shut the engine down.

Disconnect the timing light.

Even in those instructions after hooking up the tach there is nothing that it's used for. Don't get me wrong they are a great help in idle adjustment and other things it just is not needed to set the timing

Re: 1978 9.8 timing

If you want a tach anyway, try getting a "Tiny Tach". I called them some time back and you want the model that picks up two signals (or 2 sparks) per revolution. I forgot the price, but it was pretty reasonable. You can use it to set the neutral stop rev limiter and the idle but you do not have to have it. I have seen some complaints, but my Tiny Tach works great.

Good luck.
