Hi all,

We recently bought a project boat: 1978 BMC Bonanza with a Mercruiser 140 motor and stern drive. We finally got it running, got all of the electrical components working as they should but I can't figure out what to do to get the steering wheel to turn either way. It seems locked up. I looked under the console and I see a box that two cables are attached to. The wheel seems like it wants to turn, but my guess is that one of the cables might have an issue. I traced the cables back to the engine and I see where they both connect. Should I disconnect them on one end or the other to see if the out drive will turn? I am not sure what to do to get this boat to be able to steer. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. Summer will be over before I get this boat in the water :(

Thanks,
Ed

I'd bet that the cables need to be replaced. Not a hard job at all. Disconnect like you said and you'll figure it out.

Edlenon, :welcome: to iboats. Great to have you aboard...

I read your post and you can determine where the problem exist by removing the steering cable(s) at the engine and see if the steering wheel then turns okay. If not, you will have to repair or replace the steering cables or the entire steering assembly, which ever is the cheaper and best method. I'm leaning towards the cables myself. They are the usual problems. Corrosion eats them up over time. JMHO!
