To all:

You all probably wont believe this but the attached vessel was aquired for FREE!!!

Long story short, an individual bought a boat house with this boat and did not want it - nor did he want to deal with selling it. He posted it on craigs list as a first come first take attitude. So I SCORED!!!

She has a merc 228 (cabin plate rates this at 290hp but I dont think so - any info on this motor would be helpful.) Pre Alpha merc outdrive I believe as well.

So far, electronically everything works - sinks, blower, wipers, bilge, radio, depthfinder, lights etc!!! I am going to pull the drive, clean it up install new water pump kit and see if she will fire up.

Oil looks good, transom is solid as a rock, its almost too good to be true!!!

I plan on a repower, maybe just a rebuild if the 228 actually is 290hp. Otherwise, any suggestions on a good setup that will fit (without modifying the transom or housing) would be appriciated. Basically, my 1978 SeaRay SRV240 is for SALE so I can repower this puppy. BTW - Sea Ray is already sold....

Comments and suggestions are welcome!!!

PS, if anyone would like to see any additional pics just let me know and Ill post em

Regards

Nice score! I guess it pays to cruise Craigslist. I see giveaway boats on CL from time to time also but they're usually complete basket cases. Well done!

Hmmm, 228 hp for this size vessel?? Seems a little low, the sea ray at least has 260 hp and Im sure she weighs in less than 5500 lbs... I think I may be looking at a repower?

Comments Welcome.....

Ayuh,... A 350 would be the logical Upgrade/ repower....
'course, a Stroked 350, at 383 would be even Better...
Especially with a set of Vortec heads in the mix...

These boat are not normally speed demons to start with. You might get that 305 to run and be happy as a clam. It will take a substantial amount of power to gain 10 mph. Oh you stink I was going after that boat. Great deal on her man. I hope you post some pics and maybe a vid if you get the old mill kicked over. Did you pull that with a half ton truck?

oh oh.......a free boat ! yikes !....

ok.....first....good score.

second......go buy a doner boat. one with a nice 350 that the hull is shot......transom and deck rotted.....and ugly gellcoat.
you can get them for 500 bux.

ok.....with the camp....do a search looking for rot.......check the transom....decks......all the ports......hatches....everything..
then one by one......check every gauge.

Yes, we did!! At least the the truck has the 5.9 ltr.... All that matters is she made it home!!!

Right now I am waiting for new impeller kit, once I pull the drive clean it up and install new impeller I will attempt to kick her over.

As the cabin plate indicates this boat came with a 290, I must assume someone down the line downpowered (if thats a word) in an attempt to lower trolling speed maybe?? YOu are right, I dont need her to go fast- just catch fish. Having said that I am leaning more toward a rebuild at this point.

Once she is started I will check the guages, other than that I have already gone over most of the vessel and its rock solid. She most definately has been stored in that boat house her whole life, there isnt even signs of sun fade on the original cloth. In fact the dash looks brand new - no condensation or anything.

Ill post more pics as it comes along...

You might want to upgrade trucks to a 3/4 or have monster trailer brakes. Pull your drive and run water to the tube on housing. You can rev it that way to check it good. No impeller needed or damage.

Well If anyone is interested you can type '78 campion' into youtube and see the videos of the boat. I believe you can click on my channel and watch all three vids.

She LIVES!!!. Motor fired right up, outdrive seems to be in good condition, shifts smooth, temp rose but fell quickly and ran fine. Now restaining and carpeting deck. All wood in great condition. One question, it has a quicksilver mercathode - can this be tested?? If so, how? Water test pending.....

Something to consider is what Luhrs 28 did. He had to repower and used a 6.2L GM diesel. He has some cool videos on how to do it.
