need help..have a evinrude 140, 1978, will not start without starting fluid, when running, will not idle below 1000 rpm's without stalling, does not miss fire, responds well to throttle increase.. heres what I have tried..a known good set of carbs off a running motor, timer base, tune up, compression test-- (range from 90 to 115).., new fuel pump, known good coils, stator, power paks, every thing I have tried has not made any difference at all..still have same symtems.. this feels like being stuck on a sand bar..any clues to this mystery???

Howdy Boat. . .

Don't use starter fluid. It has no lubricant and can wash your cylinder walls, with terrible results. Use premixed fuel.

I think you have an air leak, probably between carbs and reed block or between reed block and crankcase.

Good luck. :)

Along JB's line of thinking - check the crankcase seals - upper and lower...
- Scott

One last tip on starting 2-strokes, WD-40 is flamable and contains oil. Gotta go with JB's diagnosis, definately sounds like an air sucking/leaking problem.

About the WD-40.

It used to be propelled by propane, which made it a near perfect starting fluid for 2 strokes. :)

Unfortunately, within the past year or so they replaced the propane with CO2. Now it is a fair fire extinguisher, though still "flammable". :(

If you have a spray can of the old stuff, it will be labeled "Extremely Flammable". The newer stuff is merely labeled "Flammable".

If you have a case or two of the old spray cans you can probably get mucho dinero for them from 2 stroke wrenches. :D

Learned something new. Admitedly, it has been 2 years plus that I have been behind the counter instead of behind the wrenches....

thanks for the tech info..I was kinda thinking crank seals..but needed more opinions on the cure...I think I will cover all the bases and do crank seals, reed valves, and intake gasket, and carb gaskets ,might as well go with rings too... am I missing anything??this is a great site..keep up the with the great tech info..boatmoter///
