Just broke the pull cord on above engine. Info on how to replace it would be greatly appreciated. Also on a couple of smaller Rudes that I have gotten the bottom spark plug seems to be discolored like a brassy look to it and the top one looks as it should. Is this a sign of overheating ? I have run it for a lenght of time and can still touch the cylinders for a few seconds plus I have ordered a non contact temp gun. Thanks

I've also seen s/plugs change in their appearance but don't have a clue as to why.

The manual starter, read on.......................

(Manual Starter Cord Installation)
(This pertains to the type of Manual Starters such as the later 9.9hp and 15hp models)
(J. Reeves)

The starter assy must be off and on the bench to do this. Split the pulley by removing the retaining screws that retain the pulley halves. Install the rope, kinking it slightly so that it doesn't come undone. Reassemble and re-install the starter.

Now, looking straight down at the starter, turn the pulley a turn or two in a counter clockwise direction to exert a pressure on the spring. Then, while holding the starter in that position, unkink the cord and thread it out the starter cord passageway.

Pull the rope all the way out to make sure that it extends all the way (and retracts). While it's pulled out, tie a slip knot in it so that it doesn't accidently get away from you and slam back in. Install the handle, release that slip knot... that's it.

Just a bit of advice! When you do get the cord replaced, be a little gentle with it. You don't need to run into the next county when tugging on the cord. You pull it gently to get a little compression. Then retract the cord to get a full bite and then a sharp pull is all you need. Over extension of the cord is what breaks the recoil spring and the cord. Hang onto the cord and guide it back after the engine starts as the sudden snap can break the cord. I see way too many folks standing in the boat yanking on the cord trying to start even a small outboard. If you need to do this, you need to eat more Wheaties or tune the engine. There is no need to abuse the cord and the recoil pieces.
