1978 Evinrude 6 idles but starves out as speed is increased.

I bought a motor that wont speed up unless I choke it and richen the nedle valve. It runs good like that but there is a clinking noise under the fly wheel as the stator changes positions. How many turns out should I start with on the needle valve?

Somewhere around 1 1/2 turns to begin. But if you are able to start it, it is close enough. It has to be readjusted after you get it running anyway.

However, that is not where your problem is. Your high speed jet orfice plug is dirty or gummed up. It is deep in the hole behind the slotted hex head drain plug in the bottom of the carburetor. You are supposed to use a special screwdriver to get it out without damage. It must be absolutely clean or it will cause the problem you describe.

The noise is not as easy. I don't know what that is. You will have to inspect it further to find out.

My 6hp (an 84 model i must admit) makes a sort of "metallic" sound when the throttle is closed down. Always has, right from new. I dont think there is anything wrong just its characteristic sound!

BTW that is only the slow speed mixture screw (1? trns out as FR says) there is no highspeed adjustment
