Hey guys, Took my boat to the dock today for her maiden voyage. Everything ran great, except, when i went into reverse to leave the dock, the boat went forward, thinking that reverse just didn't work, we ended up turned around anyways, so i thought i'd just leave the dock in forward. Went to forward and low and behold the boat went backwards. Now I know that the control box limits the rpms in reverse, so taking the boat out with that issue didn't seem like a viable option. Pulled the boat back out of the water and parked it in the driveway. Some info on the motor: it's a 1978 Johnson seahorse 70hp, but when I got it, the lower unit was garbage so I picked up a new one, from a 1979 johnson 70. My thoughts would be that maybe the 79 had a counter rotation for the prop. (prop i'm using came with the boat, off the '78 I now own) Can anyone verify or dismiss this? and if not, any other ideas what would be causing such actions to occur? thanks in advance for any help.

verify that you have the control cables on correctly and maybe not backwards,as in throttle being shift and shift hooked up to throttle.as for counter rotation just start in driveway with muffs on and put in gear ,forward should rotate clockwise.

Topol_86, some one has put a hydro-mechanical lower unit on a motor set up for mechanical lower unit.

There never was a 70HP counter-rotating J/E recreational motor but some left hand propellers could be erroneously mounted on the propshaft.

The 1978 and 1979 gearcases should have been compatible, so what you were sold is probably not one of those.

Most likely that TD is correct and you will need to find the correct gearcase or find the earlier linkage that goes with the gearcase that you have.

Thanks for the help so far, If the lower unit is indeed a hydro-mech shift as Tashasdaddy suggested, would this be the issue? did they have a reverse shifting pattern that would have been remedied with a different control box? the control box i have on my boat right now is the single lever with the warm-up lever to the side of it, would putting on an older style 2 lever control box solve anything?

The control box has nothing to do with it. On the hydro-mechanical units, the shift rod was forced down for forward gear; on your motor, the shift rod is raised for forward gear. You need the linkage on the engine that moves in the correct direction.

The control cables from the remote control move in the same direction on both units.

Thanks for all the help and advice, looks like it's time to search for the shift linkage. Probably cheaper than buying a new lower unit, correct? If so, what would be an approx. year range the hydro-mech LU was used?

Re: 1978 Johnson 70hp forward and reverse switched

An update to my dilema. After searching a better part of the day, I've found the 1975 70-135hp used these lower units. The johnson '75 70hp model number 70esl75B shows the linkage needed judging by THIS DIAGRAM I understand parts 101, 102, and 103 would be needed (other parts involved in the linkage could be used from my current setup after cross-referencing the '75 and my '78). My problem now is parts 101 and 103 are no longer available...anywhere that i've found. Any ideas as to where I could obtain these? I've looked all over e-bay, kijiji, and local classifieds for even wrecked motors I could purchase and simply use for parts to no avail. Thanks for the continued help.
