Replacing seals in my lower unit and found I had 1 1/2 shims of what is suppose to be a 3 shim set. Found the replacement shims online. .0002, .0003, .0004 are the sizes. Can someone tell me in what order they need to be installed?

The number and thickness of shims, in most applications, will depend on the specification for end-play. A manual might tell you.

Is there anyone else that might have some input on this?

Your talking about the shims that go below the upper driveshaft bearing - right? If so, as BB mentioned, the proper amount/thickness depends on the end play, this thickness will change from one gear case to another. Therefore, OMC makes a tool (gauge) specifically for determining the correct shim thickness required. So there is no particular order of number of shims used, it just a matter of hitting the right dimension per the gauge. If you are only reasealing the l/u and not changing any mechanical parts, you should just reinstall the original shims.

After looking at the link above, I realize you are talking about the shim against the forward thrust bearing (not the one I had in mind). So, for the most part disregard my previous posting. What the correct procedure for shimming this is, I'm not sure. I'll see if I can dig this info out of one of my manuals - later...

Thanks for the posts. I figure it don't matter that much, I just would like it to be right when I assemble. They are still on order, so I still have a few more days to study before they get here.
If I don't get a good guess from someone, I will just close my eyes when putting them in. LOL!!!!

Are you indeed talking about the forward gear shims or the driveshaft shims?

Re: 1978 Johnson Javelin 85hp shims

I am indeed talking about item #10 in the diagram above. I'm not sure how my unit come from the factory but it did have 2 shims in it when I tore it apart. I figured the 3rd one was worn completely away. I am not sure how much work has been done on this unit before I bought it. All I know is, now it's my problem to try to fix. Because I am too tight wadded to pay someone else. Plus I am learning alot and have enjoyed the restoring proccess.

I think if you look again online, the shims are listed as required.Meaning you might need 2 of one part # and some more of the other part #s to acheive a certain thickness. This is determined by putting the driveshaft, seal housing, bearings etc.into a jig,and measuring to see what you actually need.

You can stab at what you think you need.Shims are cheap. But gears ain't .The jig says what you need.

DHP
