I have an opertunity to buy this motor for $650.00
It is in great cosmetic shape and seems to run well.
Other than standard waterpump/lower unit maint this motor looks untouched.
How does this motor compare to a merc of the same vintage?
It looks like the same motor to me.
Also the boat I have is a 1996 starcraft 170 with a 1996 75hp elpto on it now. I runs 38mph/gps at WOT.
How much performance increase can I expect to see with this motor?
Thanks

Check compression. Make sure the boat is rated for at least 115Hp. You might pick up a few mph, but that's a very strong 75 you have there. What you gain in horsepower may be eaten by additional weight. Price seems fair if it's healthy and includes controls. That mariner is no different than the Merc expept for cosmetics.

Re: 1978 mariner 115 inline 6

My boat is rated for 125hp.
The powerhead on the motor is a new/rebuilt unit from southwest marine and still has a month left on the warranty.
The mariner motor weighs a little less than the 1996 75hp.

I am looking to repower as close to the limit as I can.
I just sold my bluewater. I am also going to sell my glastron and just have one boat for everything.
The boat is fine for fishing right now but needs alot more power for water sports.

Re: 1978 mariner 115 inline 6

willy, that 115 weighs just about the same as that 75.

i have a 1978 mariner 115 myself. its got GOBS AND GOBS of torque and lots of power through out the entire rpm range, but your gas milage will suffer badly.

i had a merc 115 inline 6 and i had it on a 17 foot center console and got about 1.5 to 2 mpg.

i switched to a 1990 90hp merc three cylinder, wich is almost exactly the same as your 75, and my milage went up to 5 mpg if i kept it at 3/4 throttle, where the 115 inline gave me 2.

the old inlines are gas guzzlers, they are famous for that. i aint trying to talk you outa the inline, cause i have 4 of them myself, but boy, i sure do miss my 90hp 3 cylinder. i sold it to buy my latest inline, and ive kicked myself ever since.

id keep the 75, wich is a GREAT GREAT motor. spend that 650$ on some smart tabs and a manual jack plate. i betcha your boat would be EVEN better that way, and youd end up getting sooo much better MPG that it would all pay for itself in fuel savings. besides, i honestly couldnt tell a difference in speed between the inline 6 115 and my 90hp triple. seriously. id take the 90 any day!

and as for water sports, those smart tabs will help you plane faster at lower hull speeds, and get up and go quicker, as would the manual jack plate, with the extended setback, youd kick major AZZ!!!

and that , folks, is my two cents !

Re: 1978 mariner 115 inline 6

Keep in mind that the '78 115hp is CRANKSHAFT rated at 115. In the early eighties Mercury switched to PROPSHAFT ratings. The 115hp became the 90, and the 140hp I6 became the 115hp. Clams can elaborate more.

Your 75hp is propshaft rated so you would be jumping to about a 90hp.

Re: 1978 mariner 115 inline 6

I think That Myoutboards has a point.
I will just wait until a late model 115 or 125 4 cylinder merc turns up for a plug and play power increase.I see that the newer(1996-2003) 2strokes only weigh a few more pounds than my 75. For now I'll get a set of smart tabs and a jack plate.
I will report back with any performance increases.
Thanks again

That said........... the '85-'88 inline 6 at 115hp is an overall good thing. Gas milage is between the 2 extremes - but the performance and torque is near the best performance/weight ratio of all mid-range outboards.

-W

Re: 1978 mariner 115 inline 6

Today I found a 1997 125 ELPTO for $3000.00 rigged
at the local boat dealer. It is super clean and they are willing to give me 3 month warranty. I think that with what I get for my 75hp I would be money ahead just to go ahead and buy the 125 and sell mine. It weighs only 40lbs more than my 75 and He said he will make sure that I can try props until I find the right one for my aplication.
