So I started old faithfull up and sounded like metal on metal !! Thought cylinder however under more investigation seems as thought the starter teeth are a little eaten up and it does not always catch the flywheel the greatest. My question do you normally have to shim these starters, I never have but I know in some cars is common.

Thanks

Theres no shims, you either have a bad starter drive or a low/bad battery,Ifthe starter dosen't spin fast enough the drive won't engage

Ok so that is what I thought about the Shims and the eaten gear could be a result of a low battery last year. Can you just replace the drive on this starter? Does anyone have a good link to microfiche on these motors

Thanks

Re: 1978 Merc 90hp Starter issues

I just replaced the brass drive on my starter for my 115 merc due to it did not rise to meet flywheel. I removed brass drive gear and found some metal wear on the inside which would cause it to stick to starter. I ordered mine on iboats for about 40 including shipping. I installed it today and now it rides up just fine.
