1978 Mercury 500 stator won't fit

Ordered and received a red stator kit for merc 500. The new stator is flat on the bottom,the old one was contoured around the windings. The new stator hits on bolt heads so it won't go all the way down flush.any body have any suggestions on how to remedy this? Checked and double checked with mercury that it is the right part HELP

No definitely not upside down .Just done more research and if the flywheel has bolt in magnets it calls for a different stator than the red one.gonna make some phone calls to another parts supplier tomorrow and see if that's correct
