So I picked up another boat and took it out on the water for the 1st time today. here are my problems with the motor

Problem #1- the motor has great compression in all 4 cylinder but will not start unless i shoot some engine starter fluid in it, then it starts rite up on muffs and in the water.

Problem #2- this is a combination of issues so when i put it in gear it will stall almost instantaneously unless push the throttle foward realy fast. it will stay at a No wake speed of 5-6 mph but once i try to give it more gas the motor starts spurtering and going up in down in rpms about + or - 5-800 rpms. when i try go anymore the say a little more the 1/4 throttle the engine will bogg and stall out. So really i can only go about 5-6 mph and if i try go faster it will stall. I took a look at the carbs to verify both throttle plates are opening since my last mercury engine this was my problem. I have ran a whole bottle of seafoam through it with no success as well. I noticed theres seems to be some fuel/oil around the outside underneath the carbs as if maybe the carbs are leaking fuel? and also some fuel/oil around the fuel line connecting to the fuel pump.

My prop is also a 21p, to me it seams kind of big but i cant wot throttle it to measure the rpms but it seems like its the original or atleast an original replacement prop. apparently the guy that owned it let it sit in the water for a while(freshwater) without running it on a regular basis. My guess would be to rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel lines since maybe it may be causeing a fuel pressure problem or that since the carbs maybe leaking its causing a vacuum issue. If you guys can point me in the rite direction I would deff appreciate it. Could i get away with take off the carbs and soaking it in acetone over night if the carbs are not leaking?

I will try get some pictures of everything before i take the carbs off tommorrow to do some more investigating so you guys can give me some info.

Sounds like you are on the right track with rebuilding the carbs. Here's what I would do for starters.

Check the fuel lines for air leaks, maybe even replace them depending on age, condition, etc... better safe than sorry!!!

Rebuild the carbs by getting a carb kit, a fuel pump kit. Buy the gallon Chem-Dip solution from any parts store as it will help clean better than anything else. Get a book and do a lync and sync. Also, check the floats to make sure they are functioning properly.

Hope this helps!

Seervice manuals have lots of info on link and sync. Since you are going to do some significant work on the motor, it makes sense to buy one. Disassemble the carbs, soak them in cleaner, blow out all passages with compressed air or carb cleaner, and rebuild then with new gaskets, floats and inlet needles and seats. Make sure fuel screen under carb cover elbows is clean.

Idle pickup timing should be 4* BTDC - 0* TDC. That is the timing when the carbs are just starting to open. Max spark advance s/b 21* BTDC.

Clams Canino posted a thread on link and sync. Look for it in stickys list

so here are the pics of the carbs being taking off and all the crud and crap i found. Also in 1 of the pics you can see that one of the bolts that holds the bottom part of the bowl is just chilling there.

So i am waiting for my kit for the carbs to come in from iboats. but i am having a hard time reading the timing marks on the flywheel since theres rust/dirt? on it, anyone have any advice how to clean it off without ruining the timing marks?

A piece of stochbrite pad with light pressure should clean up the timming marks on the flywheel. Stochbrite pad is the fine scrub pads that some use to wash dishes with. Fine steel wool works also. The 21 pitch prop is probly some of the trouble as why the motor wants to stal some when giving it gas to get on plane . Depending on the load weight of the boat + passengers + coolers an equipment, a 21 pitch might be to much for the weight.
