1978 mercury 90hp outboard is getting harder

to start.in addition,it bogs out and dies when put under a load(trying to pull a skier).Does anybody have any suggestions on what the problem could be.thank you-Pat Magee

Well Pat,<br />It could be several things or a combination of things. Check the easy things first, i.e., spark plugs. While you have them out, run a compression check and test the spark.<br />Let us know what you find and we'll go from there.<br />Backlash

Pat,<br /><br />It sounds like your carb idle screws are set to lean. Try turning the carb idle screws out 1/4 to 1/2 out (counter clockwise) from where they are set now and see if that helps. Once you find a setting that seems best, tighten the idle screw on each carb until it gently seats (don't over tighten) then un-screw them until they are all un-screwed the same amount.<br /><br />Good Luck, Gold Bear ;)
