Hi all, SUSCRIBE to this thread!!!
this will be an ongoing post for a 1978 Newman Pla-Ville boat 18 footer. 302 ford eng OMC stringer outdrive probably an 800
our Estimate for total expenditures is around $3000 includes boat and trailer. Suscribe to this thread, as it should be a 4 to 5 week restoration (Speedy Gonzales would be proud) we want the experience, and will be selling this boat as soon as it is tested out on the lake and all ready for a new owner. Update Sept 2nd 2009, looks like we will probably spend $3500 on this project easily. DOH overruns!

well, My wife and I are noobs when it comes to boat restoration, that's for sure, but thanks to everyone on the Iboats forums, we see that it isn't an impossible task, so thanks in advance.

Restoration is going on for the Newman, so far we bought the boat with double axle trailer, 4 new tires on her, for $300. Titles in hand. Tested the outdrive trim and raise lift, WORKS fine thank godness, those lift motors are pricey!, some of the gauges work, blower and bilge both work "kinda" but I wouldnt trust em so they are gone. the exterior gel coat is toast powdered, way beyond usability, so it is going to be Gelkoted white, top half will be House Of Kolors Sunrise Orange Pearl clearcoated.

Now for the bad part, the stringers and frames are shot, the wood has turned to mulch, it looks like as far as we can tell, the boat was midwest raised, so at some point the engine cover was up for a long period with the drain plug installed, so the boat filled with rainwater and leaves. there is obvious greasy waterlines on the side of the engine and some water in the oil too. looks like a good 16 to 20 inches of water were in her at some point for a while!

Day 1 pickup boat found on craigslist $300 bucks
This guy drove the trailer from Kingman AZ to Vegas on shot bearings, the wheels fell off literally when we jacked the back axle up and removed em with no tools, that far gone yup. please don't do this, it is dangerous to drive with the bearings shot to the max, a wheel could come off into oncoming traffic etc. please dont be a dummy like the previous owner of this Newman Boat. we turned the engine over and looked her over, solid hull, shot stringers and frames, engine looked real good, 2 bbl holley, small oil leak at fuel pump (holley pump), engine turned over fine with a 7/8" socket and breaker bar at the crank bolt, not seized! 2 New heads on her! yea! bought it.

a%20(3).jpg

Day2 Stripped Interior
We stripped the interior out, all the trim pieces, throttle, radio (8 track am fm LOL) vents and fuse / switch panel, plastic parts, all the glass frames for the windshield (they are in awsome shape! aluminum frames) carpet is out, we did all that in around 3 hours of tinkering.
The upholstery guy quoted us $1800, we asked for a little break and got him for $1600, if we do the side panels ourselves using his material. Im kind of a cheap, want to do it myself sort of guy, so next boat were going to do it all ourselves, buying boat seats from bass pro back to backs $179 ea and jump seats $100 ea the rest we would recover. this boat had a somehwat complex engine cover with integrated seats, so we'll let em do it.

Day3 Stringer outdrive removal
I had to work, got back at 530pm, we removed the stringer outdrive, tinkering it took 2 hours of disassembling the drive, now that we have the experience it should only take 10 minutes or less to remove one. Welll we couldn't find a disconnect for the electric shift, found some fusible links, our first thought was to cut the wires inside the hull area and pull em through, remove drive at hinge point, instead without a manual we disassembled the drive a bit, no disconnects for the shifter in there either! drive looked excellent inside, ball gears had only 10-15% wear, no seals were leaking! incredible, gear oil was like new. no oil leaks. no water intrusion. We did end up cutting the wires just after the fusible links and pulling the wire through the little hole in the drive plate for the fwd reverse electric shift. 3 minutes later the outdrive was off, marked the bushings as not to mix em up. found ALOT of grease zerks that probably were never greased, hidden or buried under something or under a metal plug. now we know where they are!
The rubber drive boot that seals the hull/drive area was shot to the max. $100 for a new one.
needs new gear oil now and new left right rubber snubbers (dryrotted) under the snubbers were some grease zerks for greasing the up / down drive bushings
IMG_0803.jpg

Day4 Engine removal V8 Ford 302
2 more hours of tinkering, should took 30 minutes or less for an experienced person
removed motor, took a couple hours being very careful, we measured the height oof the back of the boat to make sure the eng would clear once we had it up real high on the hoist. had a time getting the motor mount retaining lag bolts out, the wood was rotten, so they would only spin, even with pliers they wouldn't pull out, so we used a pry bar under em' while using an impact wrench to spin em out.
Ended up removing the rear axle on the trailer (the axle is SHOT anways), back of boat was nice and low now, the axle was in the way of the hoist anyways. so we could put the eng hoist in from the side, we didnt think there would be a enough room to spin the motor and raise it out, because the back of this boat has a platform around 20 inches wide, so it mighta hit that coming out.
anwyays, hooked the eng up, hooked trailer to my truck and eased the engine up some, spun it sideways, raised it to the max height, pulled the trailer out from under the hoist, otherwise trying to move the hoist maxed out it would have tipped over!
IMG_0821.jpg

DAY 5 measuring inside of boat had to work (photo shoot),
later in the evening when I got back, we made a rough drawing of the interior layout of the boat interior, made alot of measurements and wrote em down, since we have to rebuild the eng compartment, stringers and such, was going to use pressure treated lumber and 3 layers of fiberglass, they dont make pressure treated 2x10s though! so regular pine it is pulled up some flooring someone else laid over the rotten stuff, doesnt look good, lots of spray in foam under the floor area too. 45 minutes

DAY 6 used Super Clean engine degreaser (purple jug by the gallon) from walmart (eng degreaser) and a brush, the motor cleaned up real nice. Plan is to replace water pump, fuel pump, rebuild carb, check compression, pull oil pan and check bearings, change oil, replace spark plugs (they looked good, no blown head gasket or extra oily plugs, just normal carbon fouling)
1 hour of cleaning engine, 1/2 hour to clean engine compartment in boat of leaves and oil, dog hair and such.

Very cool looking boat. Thanks for sharing your project. Here's hoping that Stringer drive and Ford motor don't suck all the cash out of your projects. Good luck with it and keep us updated with your progress. Is it bad that I kinda like the green?

Hi Ezemobee
and thanks
nah the stringer drive is all in good working order and I used to be a ford dealer mechanic! we are GOLDEN! cheap parts at autozone! lol
Im sure the green was ok when new but it is pea green and faded beyond a buff and petroleum jelly or whatever fast fix.
The new look will be Pearl orange on top and blast white on bottom
new white face gauges, new bimini and such. oughta be sweet when final
we are pulling up the old flooring now, the wood is like woodchips it is so rotten out. will post more pics after this weekend, going surfing near Sandiego for a few days R and R then back to the vegas heat to keep working on it (118 degrees OUCH)

Re: 1978 Newman UPDATE on project

DAY 7 yank out old stringers and eng mount wood and fiberglass
took 2 hours

NEW PHOTOS posted here :D ---> www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman2/
also see a few attached to this post---

Pulled fuel sender wire and hoses to filler, vent and yanked out the old blower motor.
Well, the wife and I cut out the fiberglass using an angle grinder from harbor freight, took out everything from the transome forward (all of the engine mounting box area, was soooooo gone it was amazing the motor wasnt on the ground! Yes I had a mask on and safety goggles, ear muffs, leather gloves etc.

Someone previously did a lousy patch up job over the fuel tank and rt and left of it, so that was just some screws to pull up the floor, they didnt coat it with fiberglass!! LOTS of spray in expansive foam under there from floor to hull.

going surfing for the weekend near, san diego, hopefully more project work will be done monday august 10th or so..... check back Tuesday!

DAY 8 remove rotted transom wood August 12th

Well, back from 5 days boogie boarding in Oceanside Calif, that was a ball!
few days of camping in 75 deg weather in the rv and lots of beers later, we arrived back in Vegas 2 am today, started working on the Newman around 1130am
used an angle grinder with cutoff wheel to cut around the inside of the transom area, removed the rotted wood (3 1/2 hours) with a few breaks considering it is 109 degrees out . Started a small fire too! tossed a smoke out on the ground, wind rolled the cigarette into a plastic garbage bag full of real dry and rotted wood shards, that burst into flames! lol put it out with Miller High life :) no one ever said I was a genius...
anyways, taking a break to eat and cool down. took some pics and will post those a bit later as we tear more junk out.

Got a photo on my cell from the upholstery guy, looking AWSOME! White with orange centers (double back seats) with white piping. Cant wait to see her done! will download that image soon and post it asap

DAY 8 Transom removal = Photos and link to a ton of pics wednesday Aug 12th 6 more hours of work - so far all LABOR only costs (free)
http://www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman3/

here we're tearing out the rotted transom, 1130am to 330pm, (4 hours) way longer than expected! had to use a hammer and a scraper to remove some of the wood which was stuck very well (the parts that were not rotted) the rotted sections were way easier to remove. Used the angle grinder (my fave) with a flap disc to take down what we couldn't peel off. The wife is out there now finishing that up, how many of you have wives that would do that? I am a lucky man!!:)

then back out there from 5pm-7 pm tearing up the botched floor the previous owner installed, cut out some more flooring towards the port and starboard sides, up 8' to the ski locker. and removing gas (2 hours)

The gas tank is a 27 gallon, it prob has 20 gallons of varnished gas in it, so pumping that out with an oil vampire, the recycling place will take the bad gas, but only on every other tuesday so we have to hold onto the flammable gas a few days in buckets with lids, and yes it is 115 degrees out so Im not happy about keeping it around. Should have the tank out today, and more 1/2 rotted stringers out.
We are going to rebuild the ski locker area, and put in a drain with tube leading back to the bilge. (there was no drain just air vents.) and it appears most of the wood was NOT fiberglassed or epoxy coated! BOTCHED

FYI all this stuff is seeming to take a lot longer than I thought

LOL thats why I am putting off the Cutter for a winter project I figure if my pores are sealed shut trying to keep the cold out maybe the glass dust wont be as bad :D. Honestly the Cutter will most likely be a breeze to do after I finish my Starcraft the old man took amazing care of her and she was in a dry garage for the last 20 years :D.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville home depot COST $300 - $1200 total cost so far!

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville home depot COST $300 - $1200 total cost so far!

DAY 9 August 13th work = Home Depot / Walmart shopping for stuff = 1 1/2 hours COST $300 $1200 total cost so far spent

NEW photos photos photos ---> http://www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman4/

Picked up some 4x8 sheets 5/8th ply (3) and some pressure treaded 2x4x12 and (2) 2x4x8 (2) and a 4x4x8' all pressure treated

still have to get some pressure treated 2x8 x 12' for stringers after getting a better look at eveything, going to run front to back NEW stuff. The old wood at where the eng connected wasn't running continuously from bow to stern, now it will be! correct me if that is the wrong thing to do please
thanks
Supplies...........
got some brackets, screws and fiberglass resin (2 gallons) lots of fiberglass cloth packages, 4 life preservers (for the next owner as we are selling this boat) 2 gas mask style respirators and some cheap paint brushes (we need ALOT more of these) plus some paper bowls for mixing resin (12oz bowls) and plastic spoons etc. $300 plus boat $300 plus down payment for upholstery $600 = $1200 total cost for everything, lots more to spend!!
I figure a on top of screwing stuff together glavanized brackets in the corners wouldn't hurt anything, plus we will glass over & under those too.

DAY 10 Removed more junk wood and did some glassing (approx 3 hours time) FINALLY some progress!!!,:D this time from ski locker area, removed more dead stringer wood, vacuumed it all out, washed out the ski locker area, epoxied and glassed the ski locker area, added a bit of spray in expand foam and pressed wood to the bottom of the hull for a nice connection to the hull, fiberglassed over all of that, letting it dry and taking a break from the heat ....uhg! my daughter helping out with the vacuuming, thanks April!! see pics

NEW photos photos photos ---> http://www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman4/

see in the pics the motor all cleaned with eng degreaser too
