Hi, new here...my name is Josh, live in Indiana in the land of 101 lakes...I am not new to restorations....just new to boats. I did have a Boston Whaler Rage 14 Jet boat when I first got married...awesome..but then came along 3 kids and I sold it...too small and I paid my bills.....my kids are 10, 8, and 6 now and are ready for some summer fun and fishing in the many lakes in my area.
I just got this great 1978 Sea Nymph... 17' Sport Deck. Has a mariner 60 on it. I know nothing about it and googled it and came up with nothing....crazy. overall good shape, haven't even taken the cover all the way off...cool wood steering wheel, not sure it's original but cool anyways....It came with a Eazy loader trailer...Funny thing, my father in law owned reliable tool and machine....they have been making eazyloader's axles for years, great friends with the owner and his family. So the parts for the trailer axles shouldn't be a problem.

Professionally, I have a small restoration shop here...I am going to post as I do on my regular restorations and since I am not really knowledgeable about it I hope everyone chimes in with there opinions and knowledge. Here is the only pic so far....more to come this weekend and as we proceed. I do have quite a bit of experience in glass fiber and carbon fiber work in custom cars, but this isn't fiberglass..sooo, however I can answer questions on that topic....

As far as this goes I am not restoring to original but doing a cool custom interior reminiscent of the Fiat Jolly's I restore, some cool natural materials and bright colors inside and some nice paint. I will be getting the motor running...supposed to be an ignition prob...again..not a mechanic...and not a boat mechanic. so any help with the motor and such is great. My knowledge goes a long way in the paint and interior department but the flotation and decking is another story. I don't even know what is underneath the decking. will see. thanks, and look forward to comments.

Welcome to Iboats

Probably ought to read thru some of the tin boat builds over in the Starcraft owner's forum. Largest tin boat building group I know:
Starcraft Boats

Short cut to the list of restos:
Starcraft Rebuilds and Restorations, they're all here!

Jas & PMC have both recently finished similar sized SeaNymph's, check out their threads too:
1980 16' Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild (swapped)

1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17'

Good luck on your project & get some pix up when you can.

Not sure what this is rated for yet horse power wise but will look. Can I add some bracing inside to make it handle a bigger motor?

Hey zinger, welcome to iboats!

I can only see a smidge of your new Sea Nymph there but she looks cool:joyous:

Those two Scouts on your site are absolutely phenomenal, love em:applause:

With your skills, rebuilding this ol tin boat will be easier than falling out of bed in the morning.

No doubt your boat will hold a bigger engine. My 16 footer was rated for 90 so yours should be at least that, prolly 115ish. It'll give you your rating on your data plate.

Looking forward to watching your project! I'm a punk backyard hack so it'll be awesome to see a true professional at work:thumb:

I agree with everything Jas said up there, but especially this:

I'm a punk...

In all seriousness, I think you will find the SN to be very manageable restore. My GLS 17' (which is actually closer to 16) has an 85 on it and it that will push me along at about 35 m.p.h. So, if your motor has an ignition problem, I would consider an upgrade before you throw a bunch of time and parts at it...

Also, while the hull looks to be in great shape, that trailer looks like it might have some rust/corrosion... With your bodywork experience, though, you can probably fix that up in your sleep...

Gotta to have a good/reliable trailer and motor, or else boating isn't a whole lot fun.

Yep, trailer will be torn down blasted and epoxy primed and top coated to match....thanks for the comments and advice....what motor is a good one to look for that will be a safe reliable choice....probably look for something period correct or maybe earlier with some cool style to it, more metal and chrome..... any ideas?

Unfortunately, the truly "period" motors from the late 70s ain't all that sexy... I have a 74 Johnson. Like most things from the 70s (think big wooden tv's), its just a bigger, bulkier, heavier, louder (and remarkably less fuel efficient) version of what they make today...

Here is mine with new paint and "period" decals:

My motor is a solid runner, but it drinks gas and some of the parts are NLA. I've had a few people "notice" it and make some comments like "I used to have one of those," but it doesn't turn heads like the 50s/early 60s models with chrome, fancy emblems and more elaborate metal work.

All that being said, if I had the cheese and could buy any motor I wanted, I would put a 90 hp, 4-stroke yamaha on my boat (very quiet, fuel efficient and reliable). A brand new evinrude e-tec would be a close second.

oK, Finally gots some pics......really not bad shape at all....I purchased from original owner...friend of mine. Her dad bought it and passed a few years back, been inside storage for like 11. I paid 500 for it. Any way needs some parts for seats. I am gonna go over and see if they have some of the missing parts like gas tank and seat mount, etc.

So it is rated for 100 hp, pretty cool. Overall I love the fact that alot of it is there and untouched. I plan on redesign but now I am not sure I shouldn't just get her running and on the lake next year, maybe do some things I can always go back and do more later without making her unsea worthy. One question...is the motor locked from turning? I can make the wheel turn it....shows you how much I know about boats....anyway,thought I would share this:
Here is a car I just finished, lots of fiberglass work in it...all interior, redesigned nose, headlights....too many to list.

Nice to see the SN up close and personal from the SN owner thread, a sweet little run about for sure. That 69 FB is a mean looking machine... wow!
