I am looking at a nice aluminum boat with 1978 20HP Mercury motor. The owner stated that the only drawback of the package was the motor was "of the old '78 models that had high compression".

What does this mean in layman's terms? I am no expert and don't want to make a bad purchase.

Thanks in advance!!

Here's a pic of the motor-

check compression, high compression, is irrelevant. just make sure lower unit isnt cracked or loose, those were tough motors. depends on the price.

Maybe he meant that they had quite a 'stout' pull on the recoil starter compared with the newer models.

One thing's for sure, it'll run like the Blazes on a light boat!

Given the external condition, check it out carefully including the aforementioned compression check. Any water in the lower unit oil indicates bad seals and/or problems with the driveshaft, although if I recall a '78 should have stainless shafts.

However, looking at the lower cowling stripes, I'd be more inclined to say it's a '75 or earlier. If you can get the ser #'s off the transom bracket plate, post them and we can tell for sure.....ed

This rig is $750 motor included. Seems like a good deal. The owner supposedly works for an outboard repair shop and says it is in good shape. I just did not know whether or not to be concerned about the "high compression" statement in his email to me.

Does this look like a good deal, assuming all is in good shape? My opinion is Yes.

Thanks for your comments and help!

Coleman

Don't know where you are but if Aussie dollars would be resonable price for boat and trailer only asuming no major structual defaults even if motor is rs would get fair bit of money back if you sold it's parts on ebay
