1978 Winner

Ok, Here goes. I'm a boat rookie, just bought my first one. I bought a 1978 Winner 18' with the 4cyl. Paid $600 for it. Boat seems solid, transom isnt rotted, and interior is ok. Only problem is, engine was taken apart for repair. I have been repeatedly reassured that the motor runs. Now i just have to have someone reassemble it for me. Did I buy a money pit or steal a boat? Help a stupid rookie out here!!!!!

They assured you the engine runs but it was taken apart for repair? I'm pretty sure you bought a money pit. It may not be too bad of a deal if the trailer is decent.
Any info as to why it was taken apart? What make is the engine/outdrive?

I would suggest finding a marine mechanic that is trusted (recommend from a boating friend) and pay that mechanic to look the whole thing over - probably 100 bucks for his labor. This will determine what might be wrong in addition to engine assembly. If it is open and exposed to the elements, everything may be rusted...

If by chance it is an OMC or Volvo, i would sell it in parts. OMCs are obsolete and difficult to find parts for (of that vintage) and volvos of that age are rare and super expensivie to fix.

Wait a sec here... Ryan did you buy this boat in Okla? cuz i just bought this same discription of boat today for same price. i hope you have this boat in your possesion and the guy didnt just sell me a sold boat...lol date is 2/17/10
