I am looking at a boat with a 1979 100hp Evinrude XT motor. Not sure what all it might need yet, the ad says it runs but needs work. It also says it is a 4cyl 4 stroke. Is this motor really a 4 stroke? I didn't know that they made 4 strokes. Any info on these motors and if they are any good is appreciated. The boat is a 16' runabout that I plan to use to pull the kids for skiing.

That motor is a 4 cylinder, but not a 4 stroke. Many outboards that are advertised as needing a tune-up often need much more. I think the best indicater of mechanical soundness in an outboard is a compression test. When tested the readings should be above 100 psi, and more importantly within a few pounds of each other. Good luck

There wasn't an XT model. Later there were some XP (Evinrude) models and some GT (Johnson) models. You're probably looking at a plain ol' V4 crossflow. Perhaps it's been repainted and had new (made up) decals. I'd be real sure it's even a 1979 vintage first.

After further review of the pictures it is XP, just the decal on the one side appears partially missing. If the compression is good are these generally good motors or are there some common problems to be aware of?
